One of Cath Hermans’ series is titled Inside Out. This series, like its title, is typical of her approach. Cath Hermans is one of those photographers who works just as easily in a studio as she does on location. In fact, sometimes you can’t even see whether those eccentric still lifes and mysterious worlds were photographed inside or outdoors.

From Iceland to Egypt, from Norway to Thailand; she travels around the world to find the perfect atmosphere for her photos. Due to her characteristic use of light, you ask yourself time and again whether her landscapes are real or staged - in this sense, the world is her studio. Vice versa, she creates her own universes inher studio in the South of the Netherlands.

For the 10 years, Cath has been working together closely with her sister Emily Hermans, founder of the Dutch fashion brand MLY. With her distinctive collection photography, Cath has strongly influenced the label’s visual identity. At the same time, fashion influences are clearly visible in Cath’s free work.

For example, Cath practically always uses models, which – due to their clever positioning and careful styling – almost seem inanimate. With the themes in her work, she often refer to the zeitgeist and fashion trends of the 19th century. However, she uses them in a contemporary setting, which contributes to the alienating impact of her work.

Een serie van Cath Hermans draagt de titel Inside Out. Deze serie is, net als de titel, exemplarisch voor haar werkwijze. Cath Hermans is een van die fotografen die in de studio én op locatie uit de voeten kan. Sterker nog: soms is niet eens te zien of ze die zonderlinge stillevens en mysterieuze werelden nu binnen of buiten heeft gefotografeerd.

Van IJsland tot Egypte, van Noorwegen tot Thailand: ze reist de hele aarde af om de juiste sfeer voor haar foto’s te vinden. Door haar karakteristieke belichting, die vaak nét niet lijkt te kloppen, vraagt de beschouwer zich telkens weer af of het landschap wel echt is en geen decor – in die zin is de wereld haar studio. Andersom creëert ze in haar studio in Noord-Limburg haar eigen universa.

Cath heeft ruim 10 jaar intensief samengewerkt met haar zus Emily Hermans, oprichter van het Nederlandse modemerk MLY. Met haar herkenbare collectiefotografie heeft Cath een sterk stempel gedrukt op de visuele identiteit van dit modelabel. Tegelijkertijd zijn de fashion-invloeden ook duidelijk zichtbaar in het vrije werk van Cath.

Zo maakt Cath vrijwel altijd gebruik van modellen, die door hun doordachte positionering en zorgvuldige styling bijna levenloos aandoen. Met de thema’s in haar werk grijpt ze vaak terug op het tijdsbeeld en de modetrends uit de 19e eeuw. Die gebruikt ze echter in een eigentijdse setting, wat haar werk een vervreemdend effect geeft.
